Research Paper Guidelines and Expectations Written in MLA (Modern Language Association) format. Three to five pages typed, and one works cited page. Three cited sources minimum, using in-text citations, referencing their sources through parenthetical citation. Standard MLA guidelines; 8.5 x 11-inch paper, double spaced text using 12 pt. Times New Roman font. One inch page margins, indenting the first line of each new paragraph and leaving two spaces between sentences. The works cited page, in-text citations, and format of the MLA research paper should be consulted using the MLA Handbook for Writers of Research Papers, 7th edition.

Research Topic: Must pertain to operating systems.

Title: Short, concise, informative.

Introduction: Must identify and introduce the ideas, theory, or relevant literature to set the context of your topic. The thesis is a clear position that you will support and develop throughout the paper. The thesis statement usually is the last sentence of the introduction.

Body paragraphs: Must support your thesis, organized in a manner that moves from general to specific information. Good paragraphs typically contain a transition sentence, a topic sentence, and specific supporting information with a brief wrap-up.

Conclusion: Must affirm the thesis.

References: A minimum of three cited sources. One source must be a published book. All other sources can be any resource that is possible to cite using MLA citation, such as movies, webpages, email, etc.
