John chambers became the CEO of Cisco System in 1995 and helped make Cisco one of the top three companies in the world behind Microsoft and GE. However in 2001, that all changed with the internet bubble burst, changing the entire market.  For cisco to survive through this time he would need to restructure the company to work together.  Chambers belief was that tapping into the expertise of all employee would be the way to move forward not just relying on the top guy.

Chamber developed a clear and consistent sense of purpose and direction for the company. In an interview in 2008, Chambers said that for future employees, if they are not comfortable working in a team and collaborating then they would not be a good fit for Cisco and probably shouldn’t work there. Chamber set in place standards that are a large part of leadership.

Chambers let 20% of his management team go because they were not on board with the new direction Cisco was talking. He demanded that the team work collaboratively. He forced people to work with people that they didn’t get along with purposely. Then to help incentivize these employees, he attached bonuses to performance. The people who could not work together, he noted that they could not work collaboratively and let them go.

Chambers helped his company develop future leaders when he release 20% of his managers. The company allowed for people who were great at working collaboratively to shine through. Also it opened a lot of room for advancement for employees who were hard workers. Ultimately, the people who strived during the changes would be the leaders of the new direction the company was taking.
