Men and women differ psychologically in their behavior, from their communication style to the way in which they attempt to influence others. These gender differences in communication and influence tactics also have implications for gender differences across leadership styles of men and women. Gender differences in communication styles and influence tactics have led to creation of stereotypical gender roles that have affected men and women behaviors in the workplace. Some of these stereotypes have had negative impacts on women’s behaviors and perceptions of females as managers or employees in the workplace.

The biggest difference between men and women and their communication is that men and women view differently the purpose of conversations. Academic research on psychological gender differences implies that while women use communication as a mean to enhance relationship creation and social connections, men use language to achieve dominance and tangible outcomes. Women are, overall, more expressive, polite and tentative in conversation, while men are more assertive and hungry for power.  Men and women also differ in their relations towards others in society: while women strive to be more social in their interactions with others, men value their independence.
