  • Is it ethical to lie? When and when? Choose one of the following scenarios listed below and consider the ethics of the communication act of lying.
  • Discuss how honesty at all costs could have a horrible effect on interpersonal relationships (Although we understand honesty should be the norm, the competent communicator realizes that deserving the feelings of others is sometimes more important than the "truth.").
  • Scenarios:
    • A close woman friend just completed a torturous course of chemotherapy. She looks dreadful. She asked you: "do I look bad?"
    • Your elderly grandmother is telling you a terribly dull story. She pauses and ask you, "am I boring you, dear?"
    • You have spent two months organizing a surprise birthday party for your sweetheart. On the morning of the party, your sweetie asked you, "you didn't plan a surprise party for me, did you?"
    • You're aunt admits to having gone off her diet. She asked you if you notice the extra pounds. You do.
    • You catch a glimpse of your friend in her bridal gown just before she is going to walk down the aisle. She has far too much makeup on. She asked you how she looks.
    • A friend has been in during a terrible emotional ordeal. On your way to a party together, your friend asked whether or not it shows. It does.
    • You're in Nazi Germany during World War II. The Nazis come to your door and ask if you were hiding any choosing your house. You are.
