(Position 2)

In January 1776 Thomas Paine published a political pamphlet called Common Sense. He made a variety of arguments (political, economic, religious, and emotional) to appeal to the largest cross section of British colonial citizens (colonist, Americans) regarding why separation from Great Britain was necessary.

In contrast, some British colonial citizens opposed the idea of separation. Loyalists contended that separation was morally wrong, would result in chaos, mob rule and severe economi reprecussions. Loyalists believed that Paine did not make a compelling agrument for separation and that the colonies should stay loyal to the Crown (Britain).
