It is important for families to have clear boundaries, this will help the children involved to understand how to react to the family member.  For instance, my boyfriend’s son lives with us half of the time, and when his dad tells him to do something he does it right away, but when I say to do something, I sometimes get talked back too.  My boyfriend is good about supporting me and we both reiterate the fact that I am an adult who he should respect and listen to, and things have been  getting better.  It is also important to set rules and boundaries to protect the parental authority.  A strong parental sub-sysytem is essential for parenting tasks, therapists work to empower both partners in an equal partnership (Walsh, F, 2012).
