Christina Kwang's Final Idea

For my final, I want to create a comic based on my own personal experiences, though I may have exaggerated a few details here and there for dramatic effect.

Story
Basically the story revolves around one main female protagonist. Feeling lonely and bored on the day before Valentine’s Day, she wants to find a date. She turns to Tinder. When she finally reels in a match, who is supposedly a very handsome guy based on his profile, the two set up a date for the next day. She prepares for the date by doing make-up, trying on outfits, etc. Eventually the pair meet and the guy is not who he seemed to be. He’s a catfish—like an actual catfish, literally and by the definition as we all have probably heard as “someone who is not who they say they are online". The story will pretty much end on that awkward note.

Comic Elements
As for the comic elements that I want to incorporate, I plan to use McCloud’s theory of time and space between frames. Like when the protagonist is preparing for the date, the frames can jump from outfit to outfit, scene to scene until she’s fully ready. I also want to play with color in order to express the feelings and emotions felt by the protagonist (ie. boredom, excitement, surprised, etc).

Style
The drawing/coloring style will be clean and not rough at all, similar to that of Adrian Tomine’s because I tend to be a neat freak and can’t stand it if there is even a line out of place. The clean style will also aid in telling the story in a straightforward manner. Perhaps I may try using more expressive lines for humorous effect. I also plan to draw and color everything digitally.

Printing
I'm thinking about printing the comic on super glossy/coated paper to follow up with the Tinder/Digital/Internet aspect of my story. I want to somehow integrate the whole "swipe left/right" feature into how you read the story as well. Any ideas on how I can accomplish this will be greatly appreciated!

Story:
For my final comic I’d like to illustrate a road trip I went on with my girlfriend to San Francisco. The trip was full of moments of intensity and adventure, tripping on acid on the Haight to painting murals for a restaurant, I wan’t to capture that sense of chaos and not knowing what will happen.

Comic Elements:
I want to put interesting perspective views next to reduced graphic symbols. While also alternating between real life and illusions. I was thinking that when things got crazy I could warp the perspective and disorient the reader. Also I think I’ll be using a map with different points as destinations to tell my story, it’ll also help illustrate time and distance.

Style and Format:
In terms of medium I’ll be using mostly line with some tone and trying to utilize negative space like Bill Watterson. For the most part everything will look fairly believable but I will be keeping the toning and coloring to a minimum and letting the imagery do most of the talking i.e. using dialogue and speech bubbles infrequently. I think a tabloid format will serve my vision the best because I’ll be dealing a lot with landscapes and environments.
