Your observation paper will be graded based on:

Introduction (e.g., purpose of the study, research design. Clearly state the purpose and goal of the study.)

Background information of the child (e.g., name-must be pseudonym, age, gender, personality, family background)

Summary of observations (e.g., how you know the child, dates, hours, setting, permission, researcher role)

Major findings – child development 1) physical, 2) cognitive/academic, 3) emotional and 4) language/social perspectives

(4 points each: 2pts-description, 2pts-discussion/interpretation) Conclusion (e.g., reflection, lesson learned – be specific! Points will be deducted for vague comments without elaboration for example, “I learned a lot, I enjoyed this project, It was a great experience” ) Mechanical and logistic processes: Quality of writing, required (sub)headings, citations, double-spacing, 6-8 pages

Specific instructions: After you observe the child, write a paper (double-space, 6-8 pages) about your observation of the child’s development from the four perspectives listed above. In the introduction, clearly state the purpose of the paper, the research approach used. Background information of the child should include at least the child’s name (pseudonym, fake name to protect the child’s privacy), age, gender, personality, and family background, or any available information. specific observation dates, duration of each observation, and setting of your observation, and your role (e.g., If you interacted with the child, in what way? Did you quietly observe the child?). You can use the interview data (e.g., parents, teachers) but it should be supplementary data while your observation is the primary source of data.

When you describe and interpret your observation, make sure to cite concepts and theories we covered in class You can also refer to other reliable academic resources in addition to the textbook (note: Blogs, editorials, commercial websites, websites of organizations, and Wikipedia are NOT reliable academic online resources.) When you cite information, please paraphrase it. Avoid direct quotations. Use direct quotations only if needed (e.g., terms, jargons)

Important: Descriptions of your observation without interpretations and without referring to the information from the textbook or academic sources are pointless for this project.

Use following titles as headings/subheadings: 1) Introduction; 2) Background information of the child; 3) Summary of observation; 4) Major findings - child development a) physical, b) cognitive or academic, c) emotional and d) language or social perspectives; and 5) Conclusion.

Do not put one chunk of writing without headings. A cover page is not necessary. Please just put your name on the first page.
