"The Cherry Orchard" Play Response
Please READ: Anton Chekhov's The Cherry Orchard. As an intro to this, please note that Chekhov wrote in many ways for Stanislavski who developed "Method" acting and is therefore intentionally very realistic. Chekhov insisted that his plays were comedies, Stanislavski often treated them more like serious drama. Look for the comedy - often through understatement and character neglect towards their actual situation. This play is often defined as a tragicomedy, so look for those elements. Also look for subtext; that is, characters will often talk about everything EXCEPT what they should really be talking about. Mechanically, Chekhov tends to use a lot of pet-names and diminutives of character names in the dialogue
