Your essay should be your own original position, not a report of what another author already said.

• Clear English sentences and correct vocabulary.

• A thesis that is original, debatable, and important.

• Body paragraphs with good topic sentences that name a topic and make an original claim about

  the topic. The topic should be in control throughout the paragraph.

• Carefully chosen quotes for each paragraph. Make sure they are analyzed (not just summarized)

  and connected in a meaningful way.

• A concluding sentence in each body paragraph that shows what new insight you learned by

  working with the two quotes together.

• A standard introduction.

• A conclusion that is more than summary.

  Formatting Requirements:

1. Print all work on only one side of the paper.

2. Single-spaced heading in upper left with name and date. Mark each paper with two numbers

   separated by a hyphen. The first number is the paper number, the second number is the draft number. Therefore, your first rough draft will be “4-1.” Your revised rough draft of paper one will be “4-2.” Your final draft of paper one will be “4-3.” Make sure you change the date and paper number when you revise your document or you may not get credit for the correct draft.

3. Double-spaced text with one-inch margins all around. No extra “double-double” spaces between paragraphs or before/after title.

4. Page numbers in upper right with name or initials.

5. 12 point Times New Roman font.

6. Title of your essay should be original and is centered. The first letter of each important word

   should be capitalized. The title should not be bold, or in “quotation marks.” It should not be ALL

   CAPS, underlined, or in larger font.

7. Flush left margins. That means the left margin should be even but the right margin will wrap

   around (as in this document). Indent each new paragraph 5 spaces.

8. All students must bring 2 copies of rough drafts and final paper on time to class.
