I believe that play is a vital part of the learning experience. While it is particularly important for a toddler or young person, I believe it can even be important for older people. I believe that many parts of the child’s brain develop through play.

“Play allows children to use their creativity while developing their imagination, dexterity, and physical, cognitive, and emotional strength. Play is important to healthy brain development. It is through play that children at a very early age engage and interact in the world around them. Play allows children to create and explore a world they can master, conquering their fears while practicing adult roles, sometimes in conjunction with other children or adult caregivers,” (PEDIATRICS Vol. 119 No. 1 January 1, 2007 pp. 184.) Research shows the numerous ways that a child’s brain develops through playing.

A developmentally appropriate environment includes numerous play areas with different types of toys and thing for children to explore. For example, one area of the classroom may have building blocks, while another may have a scientific game. This variety of games builds different parts of the brain.

Games for children to play at home are also important. I might suggest things like math bingo, or hangman (which encourages spelling), or even just exploring the outside environment to learn about plants, are all good games for families.
