I read, “Brain Matters; Research into how the brain develops is shaping early childhood policies and programs” (Lipkowitz, R & Poppe, J, 1/2014). The article was very interesting and starts off by explaining the marshmallow test. The test goes like this; an adult has young children sit at a table each alone. The adult puts one marshmallow in front of the child and tells the child sit there for a few minutes and when I come back I will bring you another marshmallow and you can eat both. Upon observing the children they are coping in different ways and trying to resist the temptation of eating the one marshmallow. One child smells the marshmallow another cannot resist and eats it and another is dancing in a chair in excitement. The test is great way to see behavior and self-control in each child, there is a set of  "”executive functions" skills that include the ability to focus, filter distractions, remember and use information, plan ahead, adjust, resist temptation, delay gratification and persevere for long-term goals” (Lipkowitz, R & Poppe, J, 1/2014). The authors did much research on this and found that these self-control skills are essential for school achievement. “A growing body of research indicates that the more developed these skills are, the more likely the child is able to process what he or she reads, writes or computes, and thus succeed at school” (Lipkowitz, R & Poppe, J, 1/2014).

Because rapid brain development happens in first few years of life self-control should be learned early. Remember early years of a child builds foundation and if it is not strong it is harder to build on a weak foundation. This is where the milestones come in for each stage and domain as a educator or parent you must watch those milestones from infancy to adolescence. For instance babies need a nurturing, love and stimulation which his such a important part of child development a parent that is not there or pays little attention will hurt the brain development.
