There are four reasons for using non-standard units instead of standard units in instructional activities. Which reason is most important to you? Defend your response.
1. Nonstandard units make it easier to focus directly on the attribute being measured. For example, when dis-cussing how to measure the area of an irregular shape, units such as square tiles or circular counters may be suggested. Each unit covers area, and each will give a different result. The discussion can focus on what it means to measure area.
2. The use of nonstandard units avoids conflicting objectives in introductory lessons. Is your lesson about what it means to measure area or about understanding square centimeters?
3. Nonstandard units provide a good rationale for using standard units. The need for a standard unit has more meaning when your students measure the same objects with their own units and arrive at different and some-times confusing answers.
