# Adding and Subtracting Integers

### An integer is any number positve and negative includeing 0.

## Here are rules to follow to add and subtract integers.

For adding integers if there are 2 positive numbers, then you will add like normal and you will get a positive number. Ex. 3+3=6/ P+P=P

If you were to add a positive number and a negative number, then if the positive number has the larger absolute value, then the answer will be a positive.Ex. -4+9= 5 Larger P+N=P How you do it is change it into a subtraction problem. Ex. -4 + 9 = 9 - 4

If you were to add a positive number and a negative number, then if the positive number has the larger absolute value, then the answer will be a positive.Ex. -4+9= 5 Larger P+N=P How you do it is change it into a subtraction problem. Ex. -4 + 9 = 9 - 4

When you have a negative that has a greater absolute value you will do the same thing but the answer will be a negative. Ex. -9 + 4 = -5

If the positive and negative has the same absolute value the same then the answer is 0. Ex. 9+(-9)=0 RULE: Same sign keep the sign. Different keep the larger.

For subtracting integers, if it is a negative minus a positive then one zero will cancel out one negative to a positive and the subtracting sign to an adding symbol. If the is a negative and a negative then one of the negatives will become a positive and you will add like normal. Ex. 4 -(-4) = 4 + 4

## Multiplying and Dividing Integers

For multiplying integers you will first multiply the two numbers like usual. Next to determine what sign the answer is you will follow this rule.

Positive x Negative = Negative

Positive x Positive = Positive

Negative x Positive = Negative

Negative x Negative = Positive

For division the same rules applies. You first divide the two numbers like usual. Next to determine what sign the answer is you will follow this rule.

Positive x Negative = Negative

Positive x Positive = Positive

Negative x Positive = Negative

Negative x Negative = Positive

Positive x Negative = Negative

Positive x Positive = Positive

Negative x Positive = Negative

Negative x Negative = Positive

For division the same rules applies. You first divide the two numbers like usual. Next to determine what sign the answer is you will follow this rule.

Negative x Positive = Negative

Negative x Negative = Positive
