Prepare: As important as it is in our society to be connected, it is not until we "disconnect" that we see the true picture of our media use and the implications of it. Fo the past twoo weeks you have been asked to connect and explore. This week, you are being asked to disconnect from media for aperiod of at leat 3 consecutive days. Here are the disconnect options:

  * If you access the assignment Day 1 of class, disconnect on Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday. You can post your blog Friday night.

  * If you access the assignment on Day 2 of class, disconnect on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday and post your blog Saturday night.

  * If you access the assignment on Day 3 of class, disconnect on Friday, Saturday and Sunday and post your blog on Sunday night.

The digital disconnect applies to any media use that is not related to your classes. The preparation for this excercise is purely mental.

To prepare for this exercise, you will need to inform family and friends that everything is okay but that they will not see you on socia media for few days. You will also need to notify everyone that you will not be responding via texts messages, instant messages, or emails during this time that are either not of a business nature or related to class. Yes, people will need to talk to you, but you will use the trusty, old telephone or face-to-face communication. I suggest designating one person to recieve any emergency messages for you as we know life does go on even if we are somewhat disconnected. This disconnect also applies to television, movies, and video games so yo will have to find someone else to occupy your time.

Reflect: As you go about your life on the three days without media, you may very well experience symptoms of withdrawal or you may fill "disconnected." Choose three adjectives to describe these feelings and use them as your platform to reflect on how dependent you have become on digital media to stay connected with others. Consider the positve and the negative aspects of disconnecting from digital media.

Write: After yu have discovered who you are apart from digital and socia media, write a 25- to 300- word blog post about your overall experience. Consider how not being connected impacted your daily activities. Share with your peers how may times you almost connected out of mere habit. Include a byline at the beginning of your blog post. At the end of your blog, include a full reference for all sources cited in the body of yor blog. All citations and references must adhere to APA guidelines as outlined.
