Basic Presentation Information
The oral presentation assignment is an education/training session in which you will share your knowledge with and provide training for your classmates in your area of expertise.
The workshop should be creative & interesting. You should enjoy planning and presenting this workshop and your classmates should enjoy what you are presenting. It is not only a group lecture on the topic, but rather an interactive learning experience for yourself and your classmates. Your presentation will go beyond the scope of the content & materials discussed in class and your textbook. You will explore outside resources and applications.
Basic Requirements
- Each presentation should contain at least 5-7minutes of content
- Use visual aids (PowerPoint, overheads, handouts, etc.) – Your visual aids should help to make the presentation of the material easier and contribute to the professionalism of your workshop. You do not have to limit yourself to one aid (i.e. just using PowerPoint); instead, use the visual aids that will enhance the learning of your topic. When preparing for your presentation, assume that the equipment may malfunction or fail. In other words, you should have backups and a backup plan, just in case.
- Look professional (You are not required to "dress up," but you should still plan to look appropriate.)
- Class participation in discussion is required during the presentation. You may wish to utilize discussion questions to facilitate this interaction. You should also ask if the audience has any questions at least 2-3 times during the presentation.
- Use of outside academic sourcesintegrated in presentation
- At least 2 academic sources (from peer-reviewed, academic journals) must be cited and discussed at some length (specifically discussing the subjects, methods, and findings) during the presentation in a manner that is understandable to audience and that relates to topic.
- The majority of sources should be not older than 5 years.
- You must verbally reference or quote each source (author(s)) and year of source in presentation (you may want to include other information about the source as well, but you are required to give the author and date). They will also appear in your outline.
- You may wish to utilize more than the two required academic references, and you are welcome and encouraged to do so. If you want to use more references, please make sure that you verbally cite them. You are not required to present the other references in the lengthy fashion. You may only want to refer to a portion of the reference for a definition, example, or story.
- The presentation should be clearly organized, including an introduction and conclusion, main points, etc. (Your outline will help you structure your presentation.)
- Presentation will include one of the following interactive elements: (You will prepare an interactive element description as a part of the written portion and will present your interactive element as a part of your presentation.)
- ACTIVITY/EXERCISE – The activities should have full class participation. All directions should be displayed on a visual aid for audience. The activities should relate to topic and have an introduction and conclusion. You may use the audience in pairs/new groups or any other division. Props and handouts are encouraged. This activity should help reinforce learning. It does not have to be long as long as it serves a practical, useful role in the presentation. While games like “ Jeopardy!” are fun, they only rehash the information in the presentation and do not allow students to test or apply their skills in a hands-on fashion. Each activity should be no longer than 1 minute (including the setup). If you would like the class to have prepared or completed a part of the activity (such as taking an inventory, etc.) prior to coming to class, you need to get that to me at least 3 days prior to your presentation so that it can be posted online.
- MEDIA CLIP – Each clip must be no longer than 1 minute (including the setup) and should demonstrate a theory/concept/example in use that relates to your topic. Your clip can be from TV/DVD or the internet. It must be cued to the appropriate scene. Each clip also must be introduced and have a conclusion. Please avoid any clips that include nude scenes, excessive violence or gore, or excessive vulgar language. If you are unsure about whether your clip is okay, it is your responsibility to check with me ahead of time.
The overall assignment will have two parts. First, you will submit a series of written elements (annotated bibliography entries, interactive element description, & outline). These written elements will help prepare for and guide your presentation. Second, the oral presentation given your your assigned day will also be scored.
