Auto manufacturers are required to test their vehicles for a variety of pollutants in the exhaust. The amount of pollutant varies even among the same type of car, so numerous vehicles must be tested. The engineer in charge of testing has collected data (in grams per kilometer driven) on the amounts of two pollutants, carbon monoxide and nitrous oxide, for 50 vehicles. The engineer believes that the company can save money by testing for only one pollutant because the two are closely linked.

To test this hypothesis, start by conducting a linear regression on the data, which can be found in the spreadsheet HW12-18.xls. Take carbon monoxide (CO) as the explanatory variable and nitrous oxide (NO3) as the response variable.

A. Find an equation for the regression line, and use it to predict the NO3 value for CO = 13.7.



B. Give the test statistic and p-value for the hypothesis test to determine whether the slope of the regression line is equal or not equal to 0.
