One way in which psychology examines issues in life-span development is to review current research on related topics. For this assignment you will review current research and provide a critical evaluation on that research through an annotated bibliography. You will need to find research articles located in scholarly journals. Scholarly journal articles are also referred as primary source peer reviewed articles. What cannot be used for this assignment are web pages, magazines, newspapers, text books, and other books. Finally, current research for our purposes is an article that was published within the last 5 to 6 years.

Remember this is a course on human development so when looking for articles make sure that it is related to the subject matter covered in the course. Include one or more of the following as topic areas in your search:

Major developmental theories across the lifespan
Nature of geographic, gender, social, cognitive, emotional, and developmental factors during each period of development
Developmental factors that impact one another.
Historical and current trends in development
Current trends which may differentially impact the future development of populations in the United States
Social, and diversity issues related to developmental psychology

Course Summary

In the past six weeks, you have learned about human growth and development from a life span perspective. The life span perspective takes a look at development from birth till the end-of-life. Traditionally, development has primarily focused on childhood and adolescence. Theorists such as Piaget and Erikson devised stages of development that still have some relevance in today's cultural diversity. Life span perspective of development takes a more eclectic view of development into account. This viewpoint includes the biological, psychological, sociological, intellectual (cognitive), and emotional factors.

In Week 1, you examined the theoretical and scientific factors related to human development.

In Week 2, you examined childhood development. You learned that during childhood, physiological, cognitive, and emotional growth is much more rapid than in adulthood. Childhood development is often measured through specific milestones, such as the age at which a child learns to sit, crawl, walk, utter his or her first words, speak complete sentences, and acquire social and cognitive problem-solving skills.

In Week 3, you examined adolescent development and young adulthood. You studied puberty and the behavioral and social challenges that an individual faces at this point in life. During this phase of life, the social skills develop, especially through peer interactions and romantic relationships.

In Week 4, you examined adult development, utilizing normative and nonnormative events to help explain the situations that adults experience. Careers, marriage, and parenting are some of the normative events, while job loss, illness or injury, and relationship changes are considered nonnormative events.

In Week 5, you examined older adults—sixty-five years or older. A number of myths pertaining to this age group were challenged and proven invalid. Also, you learned that retirement is a changing concept for many older adults who continue to work and even change careers. You also examined end-of-life issues and spirituality. A number of theories deal with grief and bereavement in different ways. But all these theories have some common factors, such as emotional stress, acceptance, and adaptation. The expression of one's faith through religious practice has been demonstrated to influence mental health.
