Assignment Two - How It
You are to watch four short videos in this assignment. This will be the longest assignment of the course. I want you to learn from watching pros early in the course so you have some good examples of how to play.
The first video is very short. It illustrates how the pinch shot (low side wall, low front wall) ends the point. We will have a class devoted to the pinch shot but I want you to see it executed by people who can execute it consistently (not me)
Here's
.
Here's one question: How many examples of the pinch shot are there on the video.
The next video is a composite of great plays and I am annotating the video. This video is to help you visualize how the game is to be played. To ensure that you watch the videos, I am presenting questions below that you are to answer and submit using this form. As you watch the videos I suggest you pause the video when you see an answer to one of the questions, then jot down your answer and then continue the video. At the end of the videos, you can put your answers in the "Submission Text" box that will appear just below the questions. There is no need to repeat the question in your answer but be sure to precede your answer with the question number.
Enjoy the videos. I think you will be surprised at the type of play that occurs at the highest levels of racquetball.
Here is the
Here are the questions:
- What is the name of “the fellow with the headband”?
- Why does “the fellow with the headband” touch the backwall?
- What is the name of the “guy that covers center court so easily”?
- How far into the video (state minutes and seconds) are you into the video when a player hits a behind-the-back shot?
- How far into the video are you (state minutes and seconds) when I do a replay of a left hander tracking the ball off the back wall, then side wall, then letting it drop until the ball is about six inches off the floor?
- Why is one of the videos shown twice?
- At around 7:00 minutes, I replay a certain shot by one of the named players. What point am I trying to make by replaying that shot?
- During the same point, that starts somewhere around the 7:00 minute mark, I replay another shot. What is the point I am trying to emphasize by replaying yet another shot within the same point?
- How do the pros avoid being called for “avoidable hinders”?
- What shot ends the video?
This third video is a clip from the semifinals of the 2006 US OPEN between Jason Mannino (who appeared in the second video) and Jack Huczek. It is last part of the fifth game. In the fifth game, you must "win by two". I want you to just enjoy watching play at this high level so I won't ask many questions. Again, one of the points of this video is how the players ALWAYS get to center court after each shot. Also, how often they hit a ceiling ball when they don't have a set up. Watch it, concentrate on that. Make it part of your game.
Answer the questions below to prove that you watched the video.
Here is
to the third video
- What shot does Jack Huzcek use to get to match point?
- Who wins by what score?
- Did you enjoy watching the end of the match?
The fourth video is only two minutes long but contains some of the fastest action I have ever seen. Note that the ball is rarely higher than 12 inches off the floor.Three points are won off of pinch shots. Note also what happens on the two lob serves that Ben Croft tries. Mitch Williams takes two good cuts at it with different results.
I will not ask any specific questions. Just enjoy the high level of play.
Here is the
1 What is the thing that struck you the most about this video?
Some wrap up questions.
- What is your reaction to the videos?
- Does it help you to see how the game should be played?
- Will seeing the videos change the way you will attempt to play the game?
