Assignment Option #2: Exploring Cognitive Processes and Ethical Decision Making in Accounting
For this Critical Thinking Assignment, please respond to both prompts below in a single Word document.
1. Angela works in accounting for a state agency. The state has a policy for all agencies that travel is reimbursed as follows: Lodging maximum of $85 per night (including all taxes) and meals maximum of $36 per diem for overnight stay. As Angela is preparing a travel reimbursement for a director of the agency for an out-of-town conference, she notices that the lodging was $139 per night and that the conference provided all meals. The director wants to still claim the meals per diem of $36. What ethical theory supports this viewpoint? What options does Angela have? Which ethical theory supports each option?
2. You have work and family obligations so that often you do not perform as well as you are able on class work. It is time to graduate. You must have a minimum GPA in your major, but are missing the minimum by one letter grade in a three hour class (one course). You ask one of your teachers to raise your grade one letter grade. The professor refuses. What theory are you using to justify this request? What theory do you think affected the professor’s decision? What was the right thing to do?
