Assignment Five: "Hills Like White Elephants"

Because this is the second rough draft essay due this week, students may take extra time to complete it.  Please post it no later than Friday, June 9th.

Directions:  Please read or reread Ernest Hemingway's "Hills Like White Elephants."  This is a short piece, comparably easy when read the same week as Eliot's poem.  Like "The Love Song," "Hills" is a Modern piece.  It is a reaction to the stress and anxiety that many people felt after the 1920s and into the 1950s.  The story exhibits Hemingway's signature style of writing in a way that does not announce his topic.  Please create a five paragraph rough draft in which you discuss three symbols and how they relate to the overall meaning of the story.
