Assignment #2 – Intercultural Communication Insights  – The purpose of this assignment is to have you analyze, apply, and discuss various communication concepts discussed both in class and in the text.

General Requirements:

1.  Conduct an interview with someone of a different culture/co-culture

1. Prepare two lists.  One is a list of things that you think you already know about the other culture and the other is a list of cultural characteristics you plan to observe or ask questions about during the interview.  Be sure to research value patterns from chapter3

1. Conduct the interview probing into areas noted on your lists, paying close attention to the interviewee’s nonverbal communication style.  For instance observe vocalics, facial expressions, spatial distances, eye contact, etc.

1. Write an essay comparing and contrasting that culture to your own.  You are also to compare and contrast the two lists you have written explaining what you learned about the culture, and if what you already “knew” seemed accurate.

• Include insights from the alpha/omega exercise, lecture, and at least 2 concepts from the text in general(chs 1-7) and 2 concepts from chapter 3.

Idea:  You may wish to center your informative presentation on this interview. 

*Note:  The interviewee should be someone outside of your close in-group (no close friends or family members) and should be from a culture from which you have little knowledge or exposure.
