…then read the “Intel – Bring Your Own Device” case and answer these questions.
1. Financial: It is often stated that BYOD reduces the cost of IT. But other issue can work against that cost savings. Chose the issue that you think is the most costly and describe why you think so.
a. The company pays more for the device services that it would in a non-BYOD setting. The employee can’t get as good a deal on the phone and monthly services as the company can through bulk purchases.
b. The required help desk services must expand to include all the different device types that employees can bring into the company
c. Since the employee ownes the device, if it is damaged or stolen the employee is responsible for getting it repaired or replaced. This could result in a loss of productivity.
d. Supporting multiple platforms due to BYOD takes more support staff.
2. The general concensus is that BYOD does increase workplace productivity. However there are other issues that go along with that productivity increase. Chose the issue that you think is most important and clearly describe why you think it most important.
a. Employees are placed on call 24/7
b. Individuals may be driven by “I want it” rather than “I need it” when buying a device for productivity
c. BYOD could be jeopardizing long term productivity by upsetting employee work-life balance
d. Distractions from being constantly connected and on call could be decreasing real productivity.
3. Intel’s standard security controls for company owned devices typically took two forms, encryption and remote wipe. However these solutions didn’t fit with BYOD. Do some research at the included links and make a recommendation for how Intel should secure its corporate data.
