Purpose
To investigate the advantages and disadvantages of following a vegan, lacto-vegetarian, ovo-vegetarian, lacto-ovo-vegetarian, flexitarian or macrobiotic diet.  Most of us eat a large amount of animal protein.  The merits of following a plant based diet have been debated for years and the most current research supports a dietary increase in plant proteins and a decrease in animal proteins.  The challenge still remains to insure adequate by carefully selecting the best food combinations.  Only a small  percentage of our population follow the strict "vegan" diet which eliminated ALL animal products.   This activity will allow you to compare the advantages and disadvantages of a vegetarian type diet.  Most important, you will uncover the nutritional challenges of following a vegetarian diet if no animal products are consumed.

Directions

  1. Select what you believe is the best "vegetarian" type diet and discuss the benefits and disadvantages of that diet. This could be a totally began diet or a modified vegetarian diet.  What are the health benefits to vegetarian diets in general?
  2. Post at least a 150 word response on the discussion board.
  3. Read at least two other student posts.
