The Forehand (and the Drive Serve)

Paola Longoria (red top in the video)  is the number one female player in the world. She has a perfect forehand stroke. I am showing you this video as a tutorial for the forehand. She uses her forehand stroke when she serves too.Her drive serve is the same stroke as her forehand – excellent and awesome. This video also demonstrates how players attempt to control center court. Note how, after EVERY shot, the hitter returns to center court.

I am also having you watch this to demonstrate that you do not have to be big to hit powerful, accurate forehand strokes. Paola is very petite, less than 100 pounds.

Watch her form on all of her strokes. It is easy to see why she is number one. All of you who are not big and powerful should take heart as you watch petite Paola hit the ball with accuracy, consistency, speed and power. She has it all. The gal in blue (don’t know her name) is not bad but is no match for Paola.

To prove to me that you have watched the video, you are to answer the questions below. As you watch, be looking for the answers to the following questions. Ignore the score that is being announced during the match. It is a score from another match on an adjacent court.

1. Who is hitting what stroke as the video begins?
2. Watch as each player gets to center court after each shot. See how they always watch what their opponent is doing.  How far into the video are you before a player fails  to get to center court after a shot?  (Assuming the shot will be returned; if the shot is a winner there is no need to get to center court).
3. Pause the video at some point just as Paola is preparing to hit a forehand. Play-pause, play-pause, multiple times during the stroke. Describe each step of her forehand.
4. Most of the time, before she serves, Paola goes through a little ritual. Describe the "pre-serve ritual" Paola does before most of her serves.
5. Somewhere in the video play stops and we see the referee and some observers. At what point in the video is that?
6. Around 4:44, Paola takes a ceiling ball off the back wall. Watch that a couple of times. Describe what she does.
7. Serve Analysis

8. Can you see any difference between the forehand stroke of Paola and the Blue Player? If so, describe the difference.
