 For this assignment, you will be required to choose a print advertisement from a magazine, newspaper, or other source. Write a thorough formal (visual) analysis of the advertisement, correctly using at least five Elements of Art and at least three Principles of Art. Be as thorough as you possibly can. Once you have completed your visual analysis, interpret the visual aspects of the advertisement in terms of its cultural context (date, publication, location, audience, etc.). Finally, evaluate the effectiveness of the advertisement based on both the visual analysis and the cultural interpretation.

 

Your paper should be approximately one to two pages in length, double-spaced with standard one-inch margins. Ideally, it should be divided into four parts: one labeled “source,” another labeled “formal analysis,” a third labeled “interpretation,” and a fourth labeled “evaluation.”

  • Source: List the product, company, magazine (or other source), and year.
  • Formal Analysis: Be sure to thoroughly and accurately use the terms of formal analysis. Each paper should use as least 5 Elements of Art/Design (color, form, line mass, shape, space, texture, time/motion, value, and volume,) and 3 Principles of Art/Design (balance, contrast emphasis, focal point, pattern, proportion rhythm, scale, unity, and variety). In addition to this basic vocabulary, the best papers should use other relevant terms, such as complementary, parallel, asymmetrical, implied line, etc.
  • Interpretation: Some things you may consider: What is the advertisement’s context? (What is the product being advertised? Where did you find the advertisement? What is the target audience(s) of this ad?), Is there text? How does the image correspond with the text? How does the image characterize the product or company?
  • Evaluation: Consider the following: What is the main goal of the advertisement? Does the advertisement achieve this goal? Who is the main audience of the advertisement? Does the advertisement succeed in reaching that audience? What “works” in the ad? What doesn’t “work”?

Include the original or color copy of the advertisement you chose to analyze.
