Requirements:

Choose 3 pages of magazine ads torn out (they cannot be found online, this

is about the experience of flipping through current magazines and

seeing how many questionable images exist).

1 typed page and half  on top of the magazine pages with one paragraph 120 words each paragraph explaining each image you find (so at least 3 paragraphs of

explanation on the page), and how they fit the advertisement types

listed below.

Write numbers Ads Top each paragraph.

Advertisement types:

Remember, you only need to find and explain three of these types (below).

You might end up with two “mysterious strangers” and one “child woman,” or three “mouth only,” you never know. It all depends on what you are able

to find. Make them GOOD, fun and clear examples of your type, so it will

be a lot more fun to discuss with your groups (and me) in class on

Thursday.

1 The Mysterious Stranger (A creepy, shadowy figure.)

2 Body Parts (Ads showing only a woman’s breasts, or her legs, or her

torso.)

3 “Sexy” Violence (Looks like rape, or a forceful encounter.)

4 Murdered for fashion (Dead bodies used to display clothing or

accessories.)

5 Black women: Wild and Untamed! (Animal prints, yelling, jumping.)

6 Mouth only (fingers in mouth, mouth takes up the whole image,

mouth covered)

7 The child woman (women made to look like little girls...creepy!)

8 “Beefcake” (Men greased up and ultra-muscular, to an almost

comical effect)

9 The Manliest Man Ever (A man with a sledgehammer, fixing a car,

yelling. High testosterone!)

If you are confused about the types, go to You Tube and watch “Killing Us

Softly 3.”
