Anthropology Paper
In this assignment, you will have the opportunity to practice anthropology and to learn about the dynamics between participating in and observing social life. The purpose of this assignment is for students to develop an understanding of social inequality and to practice critical analysis skills.
· Papers must be 3 double-spaced pages, typed in Times New Roman 11 or 12 point font.
· Submit your paper by 11:19am on Thursday October 13th.
· Late assignments will be penalized by one letter grade.
Directions:
1) Select a space that you would like to observe. You may choose a space that is familiar or unfamiliar to you. This may the same or different from the event you observed for your first paper.
2) Spend at least 30 minutesdoing participant-observation and taking field notes.
· Consider the following questions:
o What does the space look like? How is it organized? Consider drawing a map of the space in your notes.
o Who uses this space? What are they doing? Notice patterns and differences.
o Who controls this space?
o Is anyone excluded from this space? Why?
3) Write a paper that answers this following question: Is this an equal space? In answering this question, begin with a descriptive account of the space, followed by a discussion of data from your field notes to provide examples and build an argument about the significance of the space.
