there main reason for all of the crusades was to rescue the Holy Land from the Muslims. The First Crusade (and probably the most famous) had two additional purposes. Europe in the 11th century had become a very violent place. There was a lot of testosterone and no outlet. Instead of Europeans fighting amongst each other, they found an enemy they could rally against. The second purpose was the rescue of the Byzantine Empire. Do you recall anything in your readings learning about Emperor Alexios I Komnenos’ message to Pope Urban II?
