Step 1: You can choose any of the following topics for your classification paragraph.  Choosing a topic that is of interest to you or choosing a topic that may be difficult for you to write about is a good way to challenge your writing skills.

Based on the following topic    •Types of people on Facebook

Step 2: Create your paragraph plan from the best ideas in your prewriting.  Write your first draft, and then write your revised draft.

First, write your paragraph plan.  Next, in the same document, write your first draft and then write your revised draft.  You should submit three separate elements that show the progress of your paragraph.

Remember that a good paragraph takes time to write.  You may want to start with some idea-development activities, such as free writing or brainstorming, to help you generate your paragraph.  Pay attention to your purpose, audience, and mechanics in your paragraph.  Make sure your classification has a topic and several categories.

PART II: READING COMPREHENSION

Step 1: Read “Fads” by David A. Locher on page 510 in your textbook.

Step 2: Answer the following questions:

1.            Locher divides one of the categories mentioned in the thesis statement into three subcategories.  What are they?

2.            Who benefits the most when a product becomes a fad?  Explain.

3.            Why do fads disappear?

4.            Do you think Locher’s categorization of fads ignores good reasons for fads?  Why or why not?

Step 3: In a well-structured paragraph that is about five to eight sentences in length, please respond to the following:

Write a classification paragraph about types of celebrities.  Make sure the fads are linked by a common classification principle.  For example, you might write about types of hair fads, or you might break down fashion fads or activity fads into categories.

Step 4: List all the modifiers you used in your paragraph.  Note what kind of modifier each is (adjective or adverb).
