DETAILS ON ADVANCED ACCOUNTING PAPER

This paper is intended for students to apply the theoretical knowledge around acquisition accounting to a real-world example. 

Requirements for the assignment: 

Each student will select a company that has recently completed the acquisition of another entity.  The student will be required to research the acquiring company and the details surrounding the acquisition.  Information can be obtained from company websites, SEC filings (Form 10-K, Form 10-Q, Form 8-K, etc.), press releases, analyst presentations, etc.

The selection of a company and acquisition may NOT be from an organization that the student works for. 

The length of the paper should be no more than 3 to 4 typed pages with a listing of Works Cited at the end of the paper.  The paper should be single spaced with double spacing between paragraphs, 1 inch margins, 12 point font.

The paper should include the following information:

o   Background of both the acquiring and the acquired company;

o   Discussion of the acquisition, including the strategic purpose for the acquisition;

o   Analysis of the acquisition accounting and resulting goodwill.  Please include a discussion of the business reason that created goodwill in the transaction.

o   Discussion of the reasons that goodwill became impaired, if applicable.

o   Analysis of the benefits or negative effects of the acquisition on the entity as a whole.  Do you think the acquisition was successful?

o   Discussion of any other matters or special items of interest; and

o   Conclusions
