   The police in America have always been controversial.  Today, perhaps the greatest controversy focuses upon police use of deadly force, but this attention also reflects concerns about racial bias in policing.  Many critics and observers have called for changes in policing to eliminate or reduce instances of perceived brutality, discrimination, and other misconduct.

         Based upon what you now know about the causes or correlates of police behavior, what steps would you recommend to change how police behavior and/or reduce conflict between the police and the communities they serve?  Be sure to support your position with reference to the scholarly literature about police and policing in the United States.
