The Biology of Politics Fall 2016 Assignment #2 (due 11/22/2016 by start of class) For this assignment, you will critique a scientific article in 2-3 (double-spaced) pages. Rule, N.O., Freeman, J.B., Moran, J.M., Gabrieli, J.D.E., Adams, Jr., R.B., & Ambady, N. (2010). Voting behavior is reflected in amygdala response across cultures. Social Cognitive and Affective Neuroscience, 5, 349-355.

 

  

 

Your critique should: 1) Provide a very brief summary of the article (no more than a paragraph). Discuss the main hypothesis, the basic study methods and technique used, the independent and dependent variables, and the primary findings. Summarize in one sentence the authors’ interpretation of the results (e.g., what do they suggest is suggested by the neural pattern?). 2) Then discuss the strengths and weaknesses of the study, which can be of the theory, the methods, or the interpretation of the results. Does the rationale make sense and does the hypothesis seem reasonable? Is the method appropriate for testing the hypothesis? Is the interpretation of the results appropriate? (For example, think about what alternative interpretations there might be for the pattern of brain activity related to the behavior. Are there other brain regions that you might have expected to be active given the hypothesis and research question?) 3) The critique should also suggest how any of the weaknesses (or even strengths) could be improved. This could be in the form of suggesting a future study that addresses the issue.
