Prompt: Throughout this course you have been forced to grapple with the concept of 20^th century imperialism as well as the role that the United States has played in the Middle East. You have (hopefully) become familiar with Michael Parenti’s definition of empire: “the process whereby the dominant politico-economic interests of one nation expropriate for their own enrichment the land, labor, raw materials, and markets of another people.” With that in mind, answer the following questions: Does Michael Parenti’s definition of imperialism adequately describe the nature of Western (US/European) involvement in the Middle East throughout the 20^th century? If yes, has imperialism played a largely benevolent or pernicious role in the Middle East? If not, explain why Michael Parenti’s definition is wrong and articulate your own description of Western policies in the region. In either case, answer whose interest have these policies served.
