Compare and contrast Mordecai Kaplan’s Judaism as a Civilization Abraham Joshua Heschel’s The Sabbath. Focus your essay around one central focus (modern "civilization", prohibitions from the work, the idea of an "extra soul", the tension between time vs space) you might want to consider the following questions. Is Kaplan’s conception of civilization too optimistic (modern society). Is heschels conception too pessimistic (perhaps colored by the holocaust)? Another possible tack: in what way does kaplans view accord with the rationalism of Maimonides and how does heschel draw off the mystical tradition of the Zohar. Most importantly what do we learn about Judaism and the religion overall by comparing Kaplan and heschel? Does one position have to negate the other or might one complement the other
