What kinds of disabilities might an ELL have?

Some of the disabilities an ELL has are listening to comprehension, doing written expression, basic reading skills, reading fluency skills, • reading comprehension, • mathematics calculation, and problems solving basic math. Piper (2012). Also they can have mental retaliation, blindness and other health issues.

What are the challenges of determining whether an ELL has a learning ability or is gifted?

There are many challenges in determining whether an ELL has a learning ability or gifted. In some cases the students are not evaluated properly. For example, maybe no testing was done to determine at what level they are in speaking English or academics. Sometimes there is no resources or qualified teachers who are bilingual to assist students. At times as a teacher you just have to evaluate the children based on observations.

What kinds of interventions are used once an ELL has been identified as having a learning disability?

 Some kinds of interventions are used for gifted ELLs and those with disabilities are the RTI. According to wilkedpedia.com RTI “is an approach to academic and behavioral intervention used in the United States to provide early, systematic, and appropriately intensive assistance to children who are at risk for or already underperforming as compared to appropriate grade- or age-level standards.” This involves screening, early intervention and always monitoring their progress as well academically. Testing the students is used as well.

 If you were teaching a class with some ELLs in it, what signals would you look for in the behavior or they ELLs to determine whether they might need to be tested for learning disabilities or being gifted

Signals I would look for in the behavior of ELLs to determine whether they might need to be tested for learning disabilities or being gifted are children with language problems. For example, they may not be able to pronounce words properly. Also they cannot comprehend what they read. In another example, they may not be able to tell story from when it begin. They will give few details but all jungle up. They are not following instructions like standing, sitting or searching for information.

It is very important to adapt a curriculum for an ELL student with a learning disability or who is gifted. This student needs special care. I would modify my curriculum and make it easier to understand. Some strategies I would implement new vocabulary words to them. For example, use diagrams, wall charts showing words and pictures. If they go to the wall and view words and pictures they will grasp words. Another way would be to introduce a lesson with culture and knowing about the world. For example, a holiday like Christmas. Compare how it is celebrated in theirs and where they reside now.

Also playing games and solving puzzles can be effective to assisting theses students. For instance, playing Simon Says where they are given instruction and they follow it. One of the things I have used in my classroom to help my students who are ELL or gifted is giving out spelling test. I have this test every week. I also used them in stories and sentences. I have found out upon evaluation these students would be repeating words and using them properly when speaking. This helps their retention of words. Also provide work based on their learning ability and styles.
