Question 2:  Offering telecommuting to employees whose jobs can support it has been shown to motivate employees.  Motivated employees have been shown to have increased productivity and engagement, as well as other characteristics that benefit their employer.  Yet Marissa Mayer, CEO of Yahoo!, a high-tech company, ordered employees to be back in the office about a year ago.  Watch this video from March 3, 2013:  http://www.nbcnews.com/video/nightly-news/51028992#51028992 .  For appropriate jobs, does telecommuting help companies or hurt companies?  Do you think it was in Yahoo!’s best interest to cancel telecommuting?  Why or why not?

Question 1:  Alfie Kohn is the author of Punished by Rewards: The Trouble with Gold Stars, Incentive Plans, A’s, Praise and Other Bribes.  Watch this interview with Alfie Kohn on Oprah (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_6wwReKUYmw). The discussion talks about children as well as adults.  Think about what is being said in this video as it relates to adults and particularly in the workplace, even if the subject seems to be about children.   What happens in the work place when we are motivated extrinsically by the promise of an incentive?  What happens when we are motivated intrinsically by wanting to do our best?  Do you agree with what Alfie Kohn says about motivation, pizza, rewards?  What can you do in your current or future work environment to assure the motivation that you want?
