2. Malinowski argued that the primary goal of the anthropologist is “to grasp

the native’s point of view, his relation to life, to realize his vision of his

world” (p 25). How does he suggest anthropologists go about this? What

methodological approaches does he propose, and why? Be as specific as

possible. Using one of the following readings as an example, briefly explain

why this goal is so difficult: “Body Rituals of the Nacirema,” “Shakespeare

in the Bush,” “Deep Play: the Balinese Cockfight,” “Grief and the

Headhunters Rage.” How might the author of the example you chose

critique Malinowski?

 

3. How would Cattelino and Muehlmann respond to the claims that the

Seminoles and the Cucapa (respectively) are losing their culture? Explain

some of the ways in which the Seminoles in Florida and the Cucapa in El

Mayor maintain and express their cultural identity in the face of external

governmental and economic pressures? Use specific examples.
