Servant leadership is a term that has gained large audiences and has raised many questions as to what is the definition of a leader.  Servant leaders take on a different meaning than a leader as in the past. Servant leader can be defined by Greenleaf in 2002, where the definition of servant leadership is described as to serve first (Greenleaf, et al., 2002). These servant leaders are focused on assisting, supporting and serving others to reach their highest potential (Greenleaf, et al., 2002). 

Servant leadership crosses many religious lines, for example from the English Standard Version of the Bible in John 13: 12-17 there is reference to do to others as one would like done to them (Bible, ESV), or in Acts 20:3 where reference is made it is better to give than to receive (Bible ESV). I know I have discussed this in simple terms however sometimes that is the easiest way to understand. Both of these Biblical references support the ideology of placing others needs  before your own, a true definition of a servant leader. An example I can provide is through our church and the teachings I recieved through my Catholic education. I learned to live by the 10 commandments and to serve others. I think that has transpired into why I became a nurse, the need to care for others, serving others.

Servant leadership also crosses into many cultural lines sometimes intertwined with religion. There are many cultures where the elderly are the leaders of a tribe or culture. Decision making in these tribes can be done through the wise elders who mentor through serving the younger generation and leading those younger members to become great servant leaders.
