The Baroque was very much like the Renaissance but also extremely theatrical. While the figures in the Renaissance were restrained and triangular, the Baroque is very emotional and triangular groupings give way to spiral compositions. For fun, compare: Artemesia Gentileshi's "Judith Decapitating Holofernes" Artemesia Gentilischi - Judith Decapitating Holofernes with Caravaggio's "Judith Decapitating Holofernes" Carravaggop = Judith Decapitating Holofernes both are done during the Baroque in Italy, yet very different approaches to a gory subject. Both artists had fascinating lives (Gentileschi was raped and Caravaggio commited murder). Besides their lives, what are the stylistic approaches to the subject matter that are the same? What approaches are different? Think and use the vocabulary we have learned in the readings and modules we've covered so far. Try not to concentrate if the subject matter was to your taste or not. Most artists for hundreds of years have and will continue to turn to Biblical stories for topics of their paintings and sculptures.
