(Interviewer):  As I had previously indicated, this interview is in regards to an academic research for my course work.  I am doing a study of life insurance among West African immigrants in the Greensboro/ Triad area.  I invited you for this study because you migrated from your native country of Nigeria years ago and have made Greensboro home.

Interviewee:  I am currently unemployed

Interviewer: What industry did you worked in?

Interviewee:  I worked in the pharmaceutical industry as a medical delivery dispatcher

Interviewer: what do you think about life insurance?

Interviewee:  Life insurance is something that is necessary in these parts of the world as it ensures that your family continues in the event of your death.  Unlike back home where one does not necessarily have to ensure that one makes provision for the eventuality, it is a most in the Western world.  You know back home, friends and family members would ensure that all funeral arrangement and expenses are taken care of.  Also in most cases, the head of the family have other ways of ensuring that the family is taken care of if he is no longer there.

Interviewer:  That is so true.  Most people back home do not have much knowledge of life insurance nor does it benefit.  I however think that is changing as the family dynamic changes.

Interviewer:  As you are currently unemployed, do you have the ability to purchase life insurance and how important is maintaining your life insurance policy?

Interviewee: It is a struggle.  Regardless, I try very hard to ensure that I maintain my life insurance policy.  Keeping it in force is very important to me.  I still have the ability to maintain policy.

Interviewer:  How would a life insurance help you and your family?

Interviewee:  If anything should happen to me, my family will have the ability to pay bills and take care of my funeral expenses

Interviewer: What would prevent you have maintaining your life insurance policy?

Interviewee:  Possible challenges include unemployment, disability, and sickness.

Interviewer: How do you religious or cultural beliefs affect your decision to purchase a life insurance policy?

Interviewee:  My decision to purchase life insurance policy was not influenced by my religious belief, but by the necessities imposed by the economic and social conditions that we live in.  Like I said earlier, back home, life insurance might not be necessary as family come together to arrange and pay for funeral expenses and personal debts are normally minimal and usually easy to pay.  More often than not such personal debts are often forgiven by debtors at death.  Extended family members take care of the family and there is very little worry about financial obligations.  However, that is not so in the western world.  One most ensure adequate financial provision for the family in the eventual event of death.  This is also changing back home and life insurance is becoming a necessity.

Interviewer: What advice would you give other immigrants in respect to life insurance?

Interviewee:  Get one and try as much as possible to maintain it.  If life happens and you cannot afford the desired amount, reduce the amount on the policy but by all means maintain one.

Interviewer: Thank you so much for taking part in this study and sharing your thoughts.

Interviewee:  It was a pleasure.  I wish you god luck in your studies.

Interviewer:  Thank you and good bye.

Interviewer: How do you religious or cultural beliefs affect your decision to purchase a life insurance policy?

Interviewee:  Religion did not play a part in my decision.  It was more for economic reasons and to make sure that cost involved in burial expenses can be taken care of.  In the event that there is any money left over after burial, family can use it to take care of themselves.
