Hello All,

The article chosen for this discussion is a study conducted to test the development in different aspects of the Behavioral Assessment System for Children, second edition (BASC-2) on children and adolescents with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD).  In this article, there are two types of reliability found in measuring children with ASD  with the BASC-2,  internal consistency reliability and interrater reliability.  The internal consistency reliability found ranged from .73 to .95, and .76 to .95. (Mahan & Matson, 2011)   Interrater reliability was found to be .69 and .77. 

One of the errors that are addressed by the author is that some of the items in on the test require verbal skills and 7.9% of the ASD group were nonverbal at the time of testing which might have affected their scores. (Mahan & Matson, 2011) Also, the BASC-2 has a series of questions asking how often the individual gets sick (somatization scale), but with ASD there could be co-occurring medical conditions that can cause a child to become increasing sick as oppose to those with ASD with no co-occurring medical condition which caused higher scores on this particular scale. (Mahan & Matson, 2011) 

Overall, Mahan & Matson (2011) suggest that the findings in this article supplement other research and hypothesis that states that individual with ASD finds it more difficult to communicate, socialize, adapt and complete daily tasks.

I had a really hard time trying to distinguish between types of reliability in the journal articles unless it was blatantly written.
