Helen of Troy

Abstract

Helen of Troy is a 1956 epic film distributed by the Warner Bros. the movie which is based on Homer's Illiad and Odyssey was directed by Robert Wise. This movie is based on the Greek mythology according to which, Helen of Troy was the world’s most beautiful woman. She was a daughter to Zeus (a Greek god) and was popularly known for taking part in causing the Trojan War, as told by the Odyssey and the Homer in the Iliad. According to some scholars, Helen was an ancient goddess who was associated with birds and trees. Comment by Dipanjan Maitra: Reduce this section, this is quite well-known.

The birth and early life of Helen is described differently by different myths. According to some myths, King Tyndareus of Sparta and his wife Leda were the parents of Helen while others claim that the goddess of revenge known as Nemesis was Helen’s mother.

Helen married Menelaus but was later kidnapped by Paris, a prince of Troy who made her his wife. Upon learning about the kidnapping, the Greeks set to sail for Troy by organizing a large expedition to bring Helen back. The arrival of the Greeks in Troy marked the start of a war which came to be known as the Trojan War. Comment by Dipanjan Maitra: Not relevant.

The film Helen of Troy retells the story of the Trojan War. The Greeks invade Troy so as to steal their treasures. Meanwhile, the King of Troy assigns his son Prince Paris to travel to Sparta and show that his people have peaceful intentions. On getting there, he falls in the sea and is rescued by Helen with whom they later fall in love. Paris then escapes with Helen to his land.

This paper will research on the topic Helen of Troy as described in the movie and will relate the topic Helen of Troy with the Greek mythology.
