Analysis Assignment #1 - DUE FRIDAY, OCTOBER 3 at 4PM
Step 1:
Choose a film scene on YouTube that is between two and four minutes in length. The MOVIECLIPS YouTube channel, found at http://www.youtube.com/user/movieclips , is a great place to look. You should try to find a scene that is of particular interest in terms of image track, sound track, and image/sound track interaction. The image track should have at least 20 shots and the sound track should contain all three sound elements: dialogue, sound effects, and music. The sound track should also contain diegetic and nondiegetic sounds. Note: you must find a clip that we have not discussed in class, and that is not discussed in the textbook.
Step 2:
Research the context of the scene: learn the story, plot, setting and characters. It would be best if you could watch the entire film to listen for any reoccurring themes/leitmotifs that may be present in the scene you have selected.
Step 3:
Make an analysis chart that lists image and sound track elements by shot (see my example, “Faramir’s Sacrifice”). Your list should include the following categories: shot time (ex. 00:01), shot type (ex. MCU), shot detail (ex. character #1 (eating a sandwich)), shot comments (ex. slow motion, panning from right to left; bright lights on character #1, dark colors shrouding the sandwich, etc…), sound type (ex. Dia., FX, DM, or NDM), sound detail (character 1 Dia. + tomato explosion FX), sound comments (ex. exaggerated reverb sound on sword, nondiegetic music accompanies diegetic singing, people are talking but there is no dialogue sound, etc…). Within the sound detail category, you should also indicate whether the sounds are onscreen (on) or offscreen (off). Within the comments sections, you should comment on image/sound interaction, image transitions, and sound transitions (you might find it easier to create additional categories for these comments).
Step 4:
Synthesize your analysis in short essay form. In the first paragraph, you should describe the context of the scene, including a description/summary of the film story, plot, setting, and characters (DO NOT COPY THIS FROM IMDB - copying from the internet is plagiarism. In accordance with our class policies, plagiarism will result in a failing grade for the course.) Paragraph two should describe the image track. Paragraph three should describe the sound track. Paragraph four should describe the relationship between the image and sound track elements. For paragraphs two through four, you should reference the comments sections on your analysis chart.
Step 5:
Submit a .pdf or .doc file on ANGEL that contains your analysis chart and essay (further instructions for project submission will follow). On both documents, please include your full name and a link to the film clip you used.
