Love is a mix of both feelings and actions that require mutual sharing of sentiments and feelings, as well as personal items. The selected readings for this exam final are “Happy Endings” and “Vegetable Love.” Love is a key factor in the development of the stories chosen for this exercise. It has been discussed in depth and the topic discussed in relation to the narrative from the text book readings in an attempt to answer question one, which states:
“Both Mary in “Happy Endings” and Ferguson in “Vegetable Love” are infatuated with someone who may or may not return their feelings. In what ways are these characters similar and different? How do you account for the different outcomes of their romances?”
The typed out topics are divided into sub-sections each with a tentative thesis statement in a bid to answer the question and address the topic in question.
Topic 1: Discovering Love
In response to question one, “Happy Endings” and “Vegetable Love”, readings from pages 450 and 459 respectively indicate that both Mary in “Happy Endings” and Ferguson in “Vegetable Love” are infatuated with their respective loved ones despite not being qualified as their partners’ choices for lovers. It would be as though they just discovered love especially in the following outlined sections:
Page 450: Mary finds a lover young as she was and actively on tour on his motor bike. She felt love for him and she desired him more than she could talk of. She however, could not understand why the focus of her love did not want to settle and share a home and time with her like John did as is portrayed by the following quote:
“She is in love with a man called James, who is twenty-two also and not yet ready to settle down. …she is impressed by James, who has a motorcycle and a fabulous record collection… But James is often away on his motorcycle being free.”
Mary would want James to reciprocate her feelings so that she enjoys the love she has discovered with James, but it is not long before they are caught and murdered by a jealous John.
The same applies for Ferguson, when he takes work leave and travels to Dallas, his final destination in his search for his love, Annette. Annette leaves a wounded man who had just found purpose and discovered love in his bid to match Annette’s conscious spot. It is evident in that Ferguson proposed marriage to her, and in the fact that he longed for a camping trip on which he had hoped they would start a family. He discovered love just like Mary did, but the objects of their desires were not with them to realize it when it happened. Evidence from page 459 where it says:
“He finally decided to go home and hope she would be there to tell him this was her joking way of saying, yes, she wanted to get married right this minute. She had quit her job so that they could start a family immediately, even before the camping trip”

Topic 2: Love Gone Wrong
In many ways, “Happy Endings” defies the norm in the way that love should progress in a marriage because the couple always ends up in a squabble of some sort and either cheat or cause harm to the other person. Mary from section B of Happy Endings is a loner for the larger part of the week because she can only get John to herself when he gets away from the family on Thursdays. She tried to make him dependent on her but she fails He merely uses her to get what he needs, and she gets lost in the loop of trying to make him love her. This is the same in section C of the same story because Mary does not love the old John and he is overwhelmed with jealousy and shoots them both. This is cold and unnerving, similar to the cold disconnection expressed by Annette when she leaves Ferguson without as much as a warning.
Their romance lives are poor because they love expressed was one way and it needs to be mutually exhibited to flourish. How do you account for the different outcomes of their romances? Annette does not express her equal share of love as it would be evident in a person you share love with. After a significant duration of time and courtship, she should have communicated and at least talked to Ferguson as a former lover. Love was not well expressed in the plot especially when it comes to Annette’s doing.
