MEDIA ANALYSIS ASSIGNMENT: Summer 2013

As a condensed course offered in the summer, it challenging to help you truly gain an understanding of the broad application of psychotherapy and psychotherapeutic influences in our culture. This assignment is designed to give you the opportunity to apply the content of this course to a movie (some more recent and some a reflection of a different era).

So ... sometime over a weekend or 4th of July break, your assignment is to take a break and watch a movie ... and, yes, apply the concepts and content of this course.

Media Analysis Guidelines: 50 points

General Instructions: Please select one of the movies from the following list that exemplify psychotherapy over a given period of time and demonstrate the complexity involved in conducting long-term therapy. The film therapist protagonists use combinations of one or more of the major modalities we are studying this summer: Motivational interviewing, Cognitive-behavioral therapy, Psychodynamic, Gestalt, Adlerian, Interpersonal, etc. Analyze and critique the specific psychotherapy techniques or important relevant points pertaining to the depiction of the therapeutic relationship. Written Grading Criteria Points

1. Identify the mental illness or issues involved, supporting with sources and

DSM diagnostic criteria when possible. 10 points _____

2. Identify the major therapeutic modalities utilized by the therapist and

describe the theoretical basis and philosophical underpinnings of the 10 points _____

techniques associated with this modality.

3. Describe the therapist interventions with specific film examples

and verbatim quotes to include critique of:

a. Therapist strategies and implementation techniques with examples 10 points _____

b. 1) prescribed length of time that therapeutic relationship occurred (duration of treatment), 2) intensity of treatment/actual interventions(ie; desensitization for recent trauma, prolonged seclusion or restraints, intense confrontation with painful material) and 3) transitions into but mostly out of treatment  (was sufficient time given for closure, was it mutually decided etc) or 4) transitions from one  level of treatment to another ( frequency of sessions, increase or decrease level of care)etc” 10 points_____
