Why Study Culture?

King Wave

This is an opportunity to introduce yourself as part of a larger conversation about intersectionality. Let's start by reading "What Constitutes a Culture," in Intercultural Communication, by Tracy Novinger. As you  read, consider the following questions: Why do you think that “culture” has so many different meanings in English? Why might it be important to have a common understanding of what we MEAN by “culture” before we can truly have a discussion about the implications of culture

Now let's watch the following TED Talk, by Taie Selasi, "Don't Ask Where I'm From, Ask Where I'm a Local."

As you watch the video above and integrate Selasi's concept of rituals, relationships, and restrictions, think about your own understanding of culture within this framework. As you write your introduction and analysis, integrate the ideas from both the readings and the video.
