Research Problem
A question that I'm really curious about when it comes to criminal justice is whether or not community policing is a better means of gaining public trust in the police and their perception of safety in the community. Community trust in law enforcement is critical because residents will be more likely to report crime, participate in investigations, and do crime prevention work if they feel law enforcement officers treat them fairly, with respect, and are responsive (Hevi, et al., 2022).
The problem is that community policing is frequently touted as a means of improving police-community relations but may not be equally effective in all communities. Residents may feel more trusting of the police if police are visible, communicate, are perceived as fair, respond to the residents, and permit participation in their community. Criminal justice agencies may not be able to identify the most effective practices of community policing without systematically exploring these factors.
My research problem is: There is insufficient evidence about the relationship between community-policing practices and residents’ trust in law enforcement and perceptions of neighborhood safety. A research question that emerged from this problem is: How are community policing practices related to residents' trust in the police and perceptions of neighborhood safety? A researchable question involves data collection from the community, and the experiences with police, perceptions of police fairness and responsiveness, trust in police, and feelings of safety could be measured.
This topic was selected as it is important that criminal justice is not only effective in enforcing the law but that good relations exist between the police force and the communities they serve. The second chapter focuses on the need for a research problem to be clearly defined, manageable, and able to be studied systematically. The topic meets those requirements since it is able to describe concepts that are subject to measurement and empirical examination. The results may also prove significant for law enforcement to enhance engagement with the community and to craft strategies that build trust in the community (Alehegn et al., 2025).
