Part A: Who Am I?
My name is Tim Reyna. I live in Dallas, Texas, with my spouse of 27 years and our two beloved, though very spoiled, Shih Tzus—Bella Grace, who is three, and Polly Ann, who is 16.
Recently, I've taken on the role of a National Talent Acquisition Specialist at NorthStar Memorial Group, a position that involves recruiting sales professionals on a national scale.
I am currently pursuing a Master of Science in Human Resource Management. With over 20 years of experience in HR, choosing this major felt like a natural progression in my career development.
Part B: The Organization and Me:
Over the course of my career, I’ve had the opportunity to work in both full-time and contract positions. While the latter offers diversity, I find greater fulfillment in the stability and growth potential of full-time roles.
I understand the concept of the New Social Contract, and throughout my career, I have practiced it, so I know the benefits. However, I have reached a point in my career where my knowledge and experience are more valuable to an organization. I want to work my last 15-20 years with one company. The key is finding those organizations that understand and appreciate your value and want you to retire from work with their company. You can see this when you interview and ask questions about the average tenure of their team, the age of the people you are meeting about the job, and the average age of their staff overall.

Defining organizational communication
Communication as balance
On one side there is Constraint
Think of it in terms of giving balance to two competing sides: On one side there is constraint. In organizational communication terms, when we think of constraint, we are referring to any force, individuals, systems, etc. that control what is done, said, believed in the organization. For example, the constraint is the means by which organizations fire employees for example.
Constraints can be long-standing institutions such as culture, policy, tradition, etc.
Constraint can be found in all contexts where people interact, such as in the home, in organizations, at Church, in social circles, etc.
Typical actions: Complying, toeing the line, saying the politely correct things, not wishing to ruffle feathers.
On the other side there is creativity
Creativity refers to all the changes that you might want to make in the organization. This also refers to your own interpretation of a situation, your choices, ways of understanding tasks, and relationships, and proposing new ideas, and changes.
Typical reactions: you can be fired, the boss can pass you over for promotions, you can be ostracized for daring to question the way things are done here!
What role does communication play here?
Organizing people or ideas.
You can use communication to make your ideas become acceptable to the organization or to be able to make changes to the organization.
Here you are mindful of the rules, and the regulations etc., and you are still passionate about the changes that you want to see in the organization.
Communication is the negotiating tool that you use to straddle both this creativity and constraint.
How is Communication applied as a balance between creativity and constraint?
Creation of dialogue.
Making an effort to understand the other’s point of view.
Making an effort to be understood.
Attempting to walk in the other’s shoes, creation of empathy, etc.
Making use of tactics such as timing, and context, to make sure that the message is well-received.
Typical actions: looks for compromise, give and receive suggestions.
The structuration theory
Gidden’s (1984) structuration theory explains the tension between the constraints governing a product, organization, society, and creativity, operating in a duality of structure.
The structuration theory is useful in understanding how communication operates in a dual process: addressing the constraints, for example, social norms, and organizational rules; while also facilitating creativity, for example, a discussion with the CEO to explain your proposal for change in the organization, a radio host facilitating a debate, etc.
