Unit VII Math Journal
Throughout this course, you have had access to unit study guides, reference sheets, note-taking guides, instructional videos, and learning aides. Reflect on how you used these resources to help you complete each assignment thus far, and describe how you can use these resources to help you prepare for the comprehensive assessment in Unit VIII.
Next, describe your personal plan and goals for studying for the exam. What methods will you utilize to help you better understand and remember the material for the comprehensive assessment in Unit VIII?
Your journal entry must be at least 200 words in length. No references or citations are necessary.

Course Learning Outcomes for Unit VII Upon completion of this unit, students should be able to:
1. Apply mathematical principles used in real-world situations. 1.1 Interpret bar graphs and histograms.
6. Demonstrate understanding of basic concepts of statistics.
6.1 Develop frequency tables, stem-and-leaf displays, and histograms to represent data visually. 6.2 Compute the mean, median, and mode of distributions. 6.3 Compute the five-number summary of a distribution to draw a box-and-whisker plot.
Required Unit Resources Chapter 14: Descriptive Statistics: Making Sense of the Data, Sections 14.1 and 14.2
Unit Lesson
Chapter 14: Descriptive Statistics: Making Sense of the Data Suppose you owned a coffee shop in a nearby neighborhood. In order to boost sales, it would be important to know the time of day that most people drink coffee or what kind of coffee they prefer. To find these answers, we must use the principles of descriptive statistics. Descriptive statistics use data to calculate different facts about certain populations. Not all statistics are meaningful when taken out of context, but some statistics can give us an idea of surroundings, people, events, or other areas of interest. In this unit, you will learn how to construct frequency tables, stem-and-leaf displays, and histograms. You will also practice how to find the mean, median, and mode of a given distribution. This unit consists of a homework assignment in MyLab Math and an assignment in Blackboard. Be sure to review the unit lesson, homework videos, and assignment instructions. Enjoy Unit VII, and email your instructor with any questions.
Section 14.1: Organizing and Visualizing Data Imagine you were given a set of 100 numbers and were asked to describe some common trends that you observed among the numbers. This task may be difficult to complete if the numbers are not presented in an organized way. In this section, we will learn how to represent data using a variety of methods. We will also explore the study of statistics and learn some key terms that are used when describing sets of data. Click the link to view the Section 14.1: Organizing and Visualizing Data lesson.
Section 14.2: Measures of Central Tendency In the previous section, we learned how to organize data. In this section, we will learn how to utilize data in order to calculate different statistics. The calculations we will discuss include the mean, median, and mode.

The mean, median, and mode are called measures of central tendency and are used by statisticians to describe different sets of data. Click the link to view the Section 14.2: Measures of Central Tendency lesson.
Looking Forward After you review Sections 14.1 and 14.2 of the unit lesson, begin your Unit VI Homework assignment in MyLab Math. You will be instructed to watch several instructional videos before you complete your homework problems. It is recommended that you print the following reference sheet and note-taking guide to use while you watch the unit homework videos and complete the unit homework assignment.
